Men arrested after stolen fire engine rampage

Larne Fire Station has been substantially damaged, along with a number of cars and gardens of properties on the Glenarm Road in the town.

The two men arrested are aged 66 and 19.

Shortly before 4.30am police said they received several reports of a fire engine, having crashed into a number of cars and gardens of properties.

Both men made off from the scene.

One of the males was conveyed to hospital for treatment to his injuries. He has since been released from hospital.

Both men are currently in police custody.

Inspector Trevor Atkinson said “I would ask anyone who may have witnessed these incidents to contact Police at Larne on the non-emergency number 101. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

DUP MLA Gordon Lyons said the break-in and theft of a fire engine was an appalling act that put lives at risk.

“Breaking into a fire station and stealing a fire engine shows a clear disregard for the people of Larne and those who serve in the fire service. But to drive it around the town and create mayhem along the way demonstrates just how low some people are prepared to stoop.

“I am thankful that no one was hurt or killed, however this was an extremely stupid and dangerous thing to do.

“As a result, the scene on the Glenarm Road this morning looks like something out of an action film and the people responsible have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

“They need to understand the consequences and seriousness of their actions and I hope that the police ensure that happens.”
