Police launched an appeal to trace the 49-year-old Irish singer, who had not been seen since she left at 6am on Sunday in the Chicago suburb of Wilmette.

A police spokesman said: “She was found safe and is no longer listed as missing or in danger.”

In a statement launching the public appeal earlier in the day, Wilmette police said they were “seeking to check the well-being” of the musician.

A force spokesman said: “O’Connor reportedly left the Wilmette area for a bicycle ride yesterday at 6am and has not returned.

“A caller has expressed concern for her well-being and no other information is available at this time.”

O’Connor, who has a history of mental health problems, wrote on Facebook in December that she has been detained in hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The singer had sparked fears for her wellbeing a month earlier when she wrote another Facebook post claiming she had overdosed on pills in a hotel room in Ireland.

She was later found safe and taken to hospital.
