Murder accused allowed to take part in cross-border walk

Malachy Goodman, from Rockmore Road, has been charged with murdering Edward Gibson in October 2014. The 60-year-old denies the charge and is due to stand trial later this year for murder and for possessing a firearm and ammunition with intent.

Mr Gibson, 28, was shot in the stomach and thigh in an alleyway near Divis Tower on October 24, 2014. Despite being rushed to hospital, he died as a result of the injuries sustained in the gun attack.

A barrister acting on behalf of Goodman applied for two of his client’s bail conditions to be temporarily varied over a period from Wednesday July 20 to Sunday July 24 to allow him to complete a walk from Clonard to Knock.

Mr Justice O’Hara agreed to suspend his curfew and allow Goodman to stay at an address other that the agreed address for the period covering the walk.

After he has completed the walk, Goodman will return to Belfast via public transport.
