Editorial: Once again, NI punches above its weight in sport
News Letter editorial for Monday, October 26, 2026:
David Allingham became the latest motorcycle rider from Northern Ireland to defy the odds and win a British title after a dream week for the Eglinton man.

Allingham and his privateer team from Co Londonderry dominated the Superstock class on his BMW machine, winning 10 of 16 races held throughout the season and only finishing outside the top three in the final race last Sunday at Brands Hatch in Kent, which was held in the wet.
At that point, Allingham had already secured the British crown the previous day, fulfilling his ambition of becoming champion in perfect fashion with a victory in the penultimate race of 2026.
The 31-year-old and his fiancée Megan Harkin were dreaming all year of getting married in the afterglow of a championship success and did exactly that, tying the knot on Friday after a whirlwind week.
It was the culmination of years of hard work and commitment, with Allingham overcoming injury setbacks and thoughts of retirement to finally accomplish his objective.
Northern Ireland is renowned for punching above its weight at the highest levels in sport, and Allingham joins a long list of motorcycle racers who have triumphed against the odds.
From Joey Dunlop to Jonathan Rea – both multiple world champions – Ulster motorcycling has long occupied a respected position on the international sporting map.
Record six-time World Superbike champion Rea has retired from full-time racing but leaves an incredible legacy, while the legendary Dunlop name lives on, with Joey’s nephew Michael still setting the benchmark at the Isle of Man TT races, where he has now won 36 times.
With an abundance of young talent coming through, including Dungannon teenager Jack Burrows, motorcycling fans have much to look forward to.
