Danny Kennedy can hold his head high

I wish to pass on my condolences to Danny Kennedy, his family and indeed his staff at this local level for failing to get re elected for Newry and Armagh.

I have had the pleasure of working with Danny for years and I count him a personal friend.

I am gutted for Danny at this time as I know of the hard work he has done on behalf of his constituents.

Even though his vote increased it was clear that republicans locally were determined like never before to increase their vote and oust a unionist as a result of this election being called.

This result is a huge loss not just for Danny but for unionism in this area as Danny was a very capable, honourable, dedicated and respected traditional unionist.

I wish him and his family well and even though it is a sad day for them they must also be encouraged that Danny’s vote increased and he needs to hold his head high that he fought a great election but was eclipsed by the republican campaign.
