EU cannot protect environment more than Stormont can

So James Orr, Northern Ireland Director of the Friends of the Earth, supports a Remain vote in the EU referendum (May 22).

He claimed that EU regulation was necessary to protect the environment.

But environmental matters are already devolved to the Northern Ireland Executive. What can the EU do that the Northern Ireland Executive can’t?

At least the Executive is under some democratic control, which is more than can be said for the EU.

Oddly enough Mr Orr failed to mention the fact that over the last nine years the Friends of the Earth UK received funding from the European Commission of over 17 million euros. The EU may or may not benefit Northern Ireland’s environment; it certainly benefits the Friends of the Earth.

Over the next few weeks there will be many organisations popping up to urge a Remain vote. I hope people will use the internet to check whether such groups might have a financial interest in Britain staying in the EU.
