Ireland was not free when it was under British rule

According to Gordon Lucy (August 6) Ireland under British rule in 1916 'was not poor, oppressed or downtrodden'.

But it was under British rule as in not free.

At one point Lucy stated: “Thus, the goal [national freedom] to which most nationalists had aspired since the formation of the Home Rule Party in 1870 was on the brink of realisation, albeit imperfectly.”

In other words, after 46 years of politically asserting the right of the Irish people to govern themselves, Ireland was still under British rule.
