Irish enjoy benefits of Europe without the responsibilities

In his letter ('˜Sorry to disappoint Nigel Farage, but the Irish want to stay in EU,' February 9), Richard Lindsay of Co Monaghan wrote of: 'One day we would achieve independence and take our place as equals in a united European family of nations.'

The Irish are members of the European Union but not members of Nato and avoid the cost of defending Europe, so the Irish have the benefits and not the responsibilities of being in Europe.
