The reluctance of Irish nationalists and republicans to use the term '˜Northern Ireland' is understandable if unhelpful, in contemporary politics in both jurisdictions in Ireland.

Morning View (January 14) is correct in commenting on the “obsessive nationalist insistence on referring to Derry”. Both Derry and Londonderry (the official legal name) have social usage and legal legitimacy.

If Irish nationalists perceive “the six-county statelet of the north” as a result of British imperialism and colonialism, then they might benefit from the wisdom of first President Kenneth Kaunda of the newly independent state of Zambia in 1964 who declined to have the Victoria Falls renamed Kaunda Cataract.
