Boris Johnson should combine HS2 with the Scotland-Northern Ireland bridge and make it one project

The prime minister wishes to complete HS2 and is reported to then want to concentrate on building that bridge and tunnel to Northern Ireland.

However why not do these as one ‘job lot’?

The answer is to extend HS2 to Glasgow/Edinburgh — and to Belfast via a north channel fixed link.

To buy a ticket at Euston bound direct to Belfast would be a potent statement of UK citizenship and of the UK internal market.

Plus there would be the potential for freight trains and high speed passenger trains direct to continental Europe.

Post-Brexit competitiveness demands some urgency is put into UK-wide infrastructure.
