Clare Bailey: Stormont is lifting lockdown in a measured manner

Lockdown restrictions are being lifted in a measured manner and the first minister and deputy first minister have assured us that their decision making is based on medical and scientific evidence.

This is reassuring and I am relieved that we have moved away from the at times incoherent and illogical approach of Boris Johnson and his cabinet colleagues.

I understand that some people will be happy with some of the announcements yesterday.

Others will be disappointed, particularly people who have been shielding for several months with minimal contact with family and friends.

The responsibility on all of us remains to stay safe and stay home and we shouldn’t think that yesterday’s announcement signals the end of restrictions.

Social distancing, hand washing and staying home as much as possible are all as important as ever.

Ultimately, mass testing and contact tracing will enable us to get on the front foot and protect people from this virus and any possible second wave.

I, like everyone, look forward getting to the point at which we better manage the threat posed by Covid-19.
