England Survived the Black Death in 1349 and 1361, but admittedly we did not have to cope with the wretched Matt Hancock and the incompetent Tory government.

And we had a great king in Edward III (Halidon Hill, 1333, Crecy, 1346 and Poitiers,1356).

And our greatest poets (Langland, Chaucer, Gower and, supremely, the Gawain-poet) survived.

We have a spiritual leader in yet another Old Etonian.

We must make the best of it. Ring out the cathedral and church bells tomorrow in honour of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

We don’t need Gary Lineker, the Premier league, professional footballers, agents and the rest.

But at such a time we need our religious faith.
