Far from being free of the United Kingdom, next year Northern Ireland celebrates its 100th birthday

In response to Peter McEvoy’s aspirations about this part of the United Kingdom being free from British rule (May 13), I have some bad news.

Next year we will celebrate one hundred years as part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, free from the shackles of the free state and the doomed European Union.

We can look forward to a prosperous and bright future within the worlds fifth largest economy, trading freely and independently and in charge of our own affairs.

The same cannot and will not be said for the Irish Republic.
