Gay marriage opponents take note: just because a practice is ancient doesn’t make it ok

Regarding a letter entitled ‘Marriage has been between a man and a woman for thousands of years’ by Allan Morrow, everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and moral code.

(News Letter letters, Tuesday, March 3)

As long as people are living within the law and doing no harm to anyone else, then we have no right to impose our moral codes on others.

When all is said and done, no one will ever force you or me to enter a same-sex marriage. Just because it’s been that way for thousands of years doesn’t mean it’s right or shouldn’t be changed.

Our ancestors were not infallible, they believed many things that have since been discredited – the earth was flat, people (especially women) that had moles or birthmarks were witches, that women could not own their own property or vote, that owning slaves was okay, that women should leave reasoning to men and they are not fit for serious employment, children should work in the mines from an early age, that it was okay to treat or beat your own wife as you saw fit.

Thankfully these things have all changed.

Attitudes change, morals change and evolve – that’s progress.

The human race cannot stand still. What’s okay for one may not be okay for another.

Everyone is entitled to live, love and be happy within the realm of the law.

Live and let live.
