With grammar schools destroyed in England, working-class white boys are at the bottom of the educational league

I have written many hundreds of letters defending the working-class grammar schools (Ben Lowry: ‘Covid restrictions will be used to undermine grammar schools,’ December 19).

Harold Wilson and his Labour governments of 1964-1970 destroyed the working-class grammar schools (at the same time as they were expelling the Chagos Islanders from their homeland in the Indian Ocean).

At the same time the Direct Grant for the brightest to schools such as Monmouth (‘Serve and Obey’, founded 1614) was abolished, leaving the public schools as the preserve of the rich British and wealthy foreigners.

Now working-class white boys in England are at the bottom of the educational league.

It is a disgrace. Just like putting a border in the Irish Sea.
