Innocent victims’ plan for legacy has led to supportive words from politicians, which this time must be turned into action

I want to record my support for Innocent Victims United for the proposals they have submitted in dealing with the terrorism of the past.

I believe they are measurable, workable and affordable and more importantly they have been developed by those who themselves have been directly harmed and their support advocates.

There have been strong words of endorsement for these proposals from politicians and others; we have heard such words in the past, which had limited substance. This time words must follow with actions.

The legacy proposals, which originated from politicians sitting around tables at Stormont House were not acceptable, the proposals in the last fortnight from the NIO, which again originated from politicians and civil servants sitting around tables, are also unacceptable.

We need a fair and equitable legacy process for all innocents impacted by the horrors of the past.

I call on the Northern Ireland Office, the UK government and local politicians to support these proposals and to act.

To ignore or refuse to give further consideration would be a further betrayal of the innocent victims.
