I must say I was surprised to see some of the reaction to the ‘discovery’ Alliance wants to end mandatory coalition at Stormont.

I say discovery because it has long and vocally been Alliance’s policy to seek a voluntary coalition government with collective responsibility at the assembly.

It would help break the cycle of crises and fights the executive has seen, as we have seen most recently over the extension of the coronavirus restrictions.

Recent election results and polling have made it clear the public have had enough of the rinse and repeat of deadlock coming from the failure of leadership by the two biggest parties, with the continual breakdowns in their relationship plunging our community into stagnation.

A voluntary coalition between parties who want to work together, instead of being forced to do so, would see debates on policy and substantive issues instead of soundbites and retreating to the trenches.

I think we can all agree that could only be a good thing for our entire society.
