John Hume helped to save many lives and to design a non-violent way forward

In addition his self-help work for credit unions gave a vital economic lifeline to local communities in Derry and across this island.

As Minister for Commerce and as founder of Derry Boston Ventures Ltd, he brought investment and jobs to Derry.

Even more importantly, as a lifelong voice against violence and as a constant, thoughtful worker for constitutional change, he fully deserved his Nobel Peace Prize.

He helped save many lives and he helped design a non-violent way for us all to shape our future.

All of us are indebted to him and we all benefit from his years of exhausting work.

We send our warm condolences to all the Hume family, especially to Pat, his tireless background co-worker for all those hugely difficult years.
