Letter: Alliance abandoned integrity of its own party when it voted to remove the word ‘innocent’ from the legal definition of victim
A letter from William Mitchell:

Nationalism in Northern Ireland continues to suffer from a deep and wilful moral blindness.
They have spent decades voting for unapologetic terrorists and their political mouthpieces - some who organised and justified the cold-blooded murders of men, women and children across this province.
These same figures still claim that their campaign of slaughter was ‘justified’, that ‘there was no alternative’.

Such a mindset is not merely wrong; it is grotesque - a sickness of moral reasoning that stains every democratic principle they pretend to uphold.
What makes this all the more disgraceful is the behaviour of those who once claimed to rise above sectarian politics.
The Alliance Party, by joining Sinn Féin and the SDLP to remove the word ‘innocent’ from the legal definition of victim, has betrayed both conscience and history.
In that moment, they abandoned the founding integrity of its own party – men and women who once stood for fairness, truth, and moral balance.
Instead, Alliance has chosen to stand shoulder to shoulder with those who still excuse terror and rewrite its consequences.
To erase the distinction between the bomber and the bombed, between the murderer and the murdered, is a moral obscenity.
It is an insult to every innocent family that lived through the horror of terrorism.
Then to claim they did so in the name of ‘equality’ is not justice, it is cowardice dressed in moral language. It is every bit as repugnant as the old lie that ‘there was no alternative’.
