Letter: Catherine Connolly is highly intelligent but she will be bored out of her mind as president ... and that will lead to a constitutional crisis for the Republic of Ireland

A letter from Michael Deasy:

My Gaeilge is only middling and my country has two languages.

When you speak two languages you have the benefit of two ways of thinking and that is a proud and provident aspect of the accumulating Irish soul. This country has plenty soul. It was forged and sustained through centuries of trial and the indomitable grit of underdog status that goes with all of that.

But President Connolly is a barrister. She knows her constitution. She has no business using "an teanga" to heighten divisions and insinuate relegated authenticity into the national discourse concerning millions of citizens.

The simple fact of the matter is this. The president has no role in the formation and promulgation of foreign policy, trade policy, employment law policy – or any policy. If that is what she really wants to do she should resign her office, re-enter parliamentary politics and stand in the Galway West by-election.

In my view this president will eventually precipitate a constitutional crisis. She is a highly intelligent, courageous, respectable, opinionated and combative individual who will be bored out of her mind in the Park. She is in the wrong job and she has no one to blame but herself.
