Letter: Concerns over Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally's ability to resolve Anglican Church's problems are rightly flagged up

A letter from James Hardy:

I write in reference to an article by Billy Kennedy (Global Anglican Communion church grouping meet amid disquiet over Sarah Mullally, March 14) which appeared in the Churches section of the News Letter.

The excellent report rightly red flags concern about Sarah Mullally being a divisive figure as Archbishop of Canterbury. Generations of departed Anglicans might never have imagined an abortion supporting mother and nurse becoming the figurehead leader of global Anglicanism.

Billy Kennedy's article refers to the GAFCON (Global Anglican Future Conference) movement as a potential opposition to Archbishop Mullally.

But, 'The Critical Friend Blog' by Tim Wyatt has a brief March 13 online article called 'In the grey zone'. It considers inherent weaknesses and multiple internal conflicts within GAFCON. GAFCON increasingly looks like a schismatic group at risk of internal schism, which has perpetually threatened to break away from the mainstream Anglican Church numerous times without actually ever seeing this threat through.

Our own Church of Ireland tradition has only two GAFCON supporting bishops out of around a dozen serving bishops. Reports about a GAFCON archbishop in the ANCA (Anglican Church in North America) breakaway group are certainly not edifying.

The USA archbishop connected to GAFCON is the subject of this 'Baptist News Global' website online article: 'ACNA archbishop faces allegations of sexual misconduct, bullying'. Neither Mullally, nor GAFCON, currently look confidently able to resolve sinister Anglican Church problems.
