The government has announced that the level of the agricultural and business property reliefs threshold will be increased from £1m to £2.5m when it is introduced in April 2026

Following repeated and renewed representations to ministers in the Treasury and EFRA departments regarding the unacceptable impact that farm inheritance tax would have on farm holdings in Northern Ireland, I am pleased that progress has been made on this issue with an increase in the threshold for eligibility from £1 million to £2.5million announced by the EFRA secretary of state.

This is a significant development and will protect smaller farm holdings in Ireland and our agri-food industry.

Baroness Ritchie
