Letter: Silence is not an option in face of anti-Semitism - such hatred is evil, plain and simple, and it must be challenged

A letter from W J Craig:

I was deeply shocked and saddened to see the news of the anti-Semitic terrorist attack in Sydney on Sunday.

People offer hugs to each other at a memorial at Bondi Beach. Fifteen people were killed when, according to local police, father and son Sajid and Naveed Akram allegedly opened fire on more than 1,000 people attending a Jewish festival in the Archer Park area of the popular beach at 6.47pm local time on Sunday.placeholder image

Once again, Jewish people have been targeted simply for being Jewish, and it is utterly reprehensible.

What is most worrying is that this is not a one-off. Anti-Semitism is on the rise across the world and it feels like lessons from history are being forgotten far too easily.

This kind of hatred is evil, plain and simple, and it must be challenged wherever it raises its head.

At times like this it’s important that we stand with our Jewish brothers and sisters. Here in Northern Ireland, the Jewish community should know they have friends, allies and people who care deeply about their safety and wellbeing.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and Jewish communities everywhere at this difficult time.

We cannot stay silent in the face of this hatred because silence only ever helps it grow.

Shalom.
