The Twelfth of July is, at its heart, a celebration of the constitutional principles that emerged from the Glorious Revolution and were secured by King William III’s victory at the Boyne.

For generations, Protestants have commemorated these events under the banner of ‘Civil and religious liberty for all’.

That motto reminds us that our tradition is rooted in support for the rule of law, parliamentary democracy, liberty of conscience and the right of every individual to practice their faith freely. While history is often complex and the full extension of these liberties developed over time, these constitutional changes helped shape the freedoms that people of all faiths and none enjoy today.

For that reason, our celebrations should always reflect the principles we profess. The Twelfth and associated events should be occasions that demonstrate dignity, respect and confidence in our heritage. Actions or displays that could reasonably be interpreted as showing hostility towards any religion or faith community sit uneasily alongside a celebration of civil and religious liberty.

Our heritage is best honoured by upholding the values of freedom, respect and the peaceful enjoyment of our traditions.

By remaining true to these principles, we ensure that the Twelfth continues to be a positive expression of our history and culture, worthy of the phrase that has guided the Orange Institution for generations: ‘Civil and religious liberty for all - special privileges for none’.
