Letter: There is much trumpeting of a united Ireland but little said about how unification would improve our lives

There are good commentaries from professional writers expressing opinions on the issue of the unifying of the island of Ireland but they offer nothing in the matter of how uniting would improve the lives of Northern Irish.

Surely there should be at least one member of the Irish government who is willing to come off the fence and say, ‘this is how your lives will be improved and will not take away any of the community services like free healthcare that you enjoy’. Or at best, what would replace the loss of this healthcare benefit?

At the moment it would appear there is lots of aspiration but nothing for people of all shades of opinion in Northern Ireland to applaud.

It would make sense to accept that the majority of the Northern Irish do not need to leave the comfort of the UK to claim their Irish heritage and to acknowledge their Irish roots.

There is much trumpeting of the shared island protocol. This means that the Northern Irish must be allowed to share the island while remaining within the UK. This means we need to share as we are and not what activists would like us to be, in my view.
