Letter: They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions - that’s where Ulster is now

Certain events in history stick out and leave an indelible footprint.

The story of Neville Chamberlain coming back from Munich in 1938 holding a paper aloft and declaring “peace in our time” has entered into folklore, and paints a picture that should be forever hung up and framed in the memory.

He was conned! Britain was weak, Germany saw that and prepared for war. They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions; that’s where Ulster is now.

We too are being sold a lie. It started with the Belfast Agreement, those who bought it betrayed innocent blood.

Some, in innocence, claimed it was for peace, but it was death from a thousand cuts. Their guilt not only passed to us, it passed to our children; and it cast a shadow.

The Belfast Agreement set in stone, and handed down from Mount Sinai, has since been amended by the protocol. The strident voices that held up that paper are now selling a repeat. They are selling our soul and our birth right, and selling them cheap.

I hang my head in shame for a unionist community that has none; I’ll blush for them! Britain has betrayed us, and the EU is circling like ghouls. We are weak and divided, and they despise us.

We now have joint rule from Brussels and London, and that enterprise is a one-way trip to Dublin; anyone who can’t see that is wilfully or blissfully blind.

The protocol has set us on course for a united Ireland, there’s a misnomer, and I had wasn’t consulted. They treat me with condescension, feed me a lie, and expect me to swallow it; they insult me and expect me to thank them for it.

Our unionist politicians are dithering, and our enemies look on with unconcealed amusement watching them squirm.

Britain has made it clear it doesn’t want us and is letting us go; on their terms! In response, we sink deeper into our comfort zone, and allow ourselves to be treated like commodities to be bought and sold at their leisure. Have we no pride, and lost all sense of dignity and self-respect?

It’s time to challenge Irish nationalism to come clean and spell out its terms for a ‘new Ireland’, I want to see the fine print and the bottom line.

I won’t be bounced into a united Ireland or eased in by stealth – if it happens I would like it to be my idea. Sinn Fein’s actions belie their fine words, they are determined to hold our feet to the fire.

In promoting the Irish language, it’s their way or no way. If we don’t surrender, it will be imposed, and it’s not open for negotiation.

At the moment Sinn Fein is high on rhetoric and low on facts, it’s a case of heads I win tails you lose.

Alliance has nibbled at the bait and been hooked. Gutted, and cooked on a low heat, they are served up on a platter of stuffed chicken and raw mince; and a generous portion of the greens.

It seems like a balanced diet, but it’s a novelty that has run its course. It once stimulated the taste buds of the politically naïve but now comes with a health warning, and could have serious long term affects. We need to look carefully at our diet, some of it is poison dressed up.
