Letter: Trumpism will be a shambles on an impossible scale - but after that, the reckoning comes
A letter from Michael Deasy:

The next US presidential election seems like it’s a long way off but it isn't.
I predict that the Democrats will climb out of the culture wars rabbit hole they have been expertly drawn down by the Republicans. Their last convention was toe-curling to watch.
I predict that president Trump's antediluvian economic fetish for trade wars and tariffs will send the US economy into stagflation. His economic policy platform is supported only by sycophants. It has never worked anywhere. Inflation, domestic economic stagnation, corruption and graft. These seem to me to be the only unpalatable items on president Trump's policy menu.

I predict that this too will pass. And the thing for our political leaders here in Ireland to concentrate upon is this: voters like policies that work. Trumpism is about to be given its head, and it will be a shambles on a scale that is impossible to conceal from the average Joe. Tomorrow always comes, and it brings the numbers with it. The numbers never lie.
After that, the reckoning comes. When it comes, Donald Trump will be older, slower, less coherent, more objectionable - and unable to justify the numbers.
What can I say? I'm an inveterate optimist.
