Letter: Winter fuel allowance for Northern Ireland pensioners should be restored immediately

A letter from Gerry Cullen:

The announcement of an additional £1.5 billion in funding to the Stormont Executive from the Exchequer affords Stormont the opportunity to reverse their dreadful decision to mimic British Labour government austerity and deny many of our pensioners the winter fuel payment.

At a cost to Stormont of £44.3 million, there should be no ‘ifs’ ‘buts’ or ‘maybes’, the winter fuel allowance should be restored immediately.

Such empathy on the part of Stormont would promote trust in the executive and would be ‘warmly’ received across Northern Ireland.
