RQIA should explain the decision to withdraw from care homes

I am writing to you as the brother of a Co Tyrone care home resident to express my fears surrounding care homes and Covid-19.

I would like the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA) to explain their decisions to withdraw from care homes when so many relatives have very real concerns regarding Covid-19 deaths in care homes, the prevalence of Covid-19 infection rates in care homes, the lack of Covid-19 testing of both residents and staff, the lack of testing of new admissions to care homes, the lack of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), questions about the legitimacy of Do Not Resuscitate instructions, and the availability of adequate oxygen provision in care homes.

At a time when care homes are facing danger and relatives are gravely concerned about our loved ones.

I would ask the RQIA to reverse their decision to withdraw from care homes.

I believe that the RQIA are uniquely placed to advocate on behalf of residents and relatives and to make representation to Department of Health and the health minister on our behalf.

As an independent body they should not be taking instruction from the Department of Health or the minister, rather they should be making their own decisions based on the extensive knowledge they hold on the care home sector.

However they cannot do this at the end of a phone line.

The RQIA should be on the ground in care homes and without fear or favour they should be highlighting the dangers our loved ones face.

Now is the time for the RQIA to be a truly independent regulator and to be a fearless advocate on behalf of residents relatives and social care staff.
