Trevor Ringland is a beacon of hope but we all must learn lessons, however unpalatable

I am a great admirer of Trevor Ringland, first of all as a winger for Ireland on the rugby field in the 1980s and since then as a tireless worker for peace and friendship between the communities in Northern Ireland

(Trevor Ringland’s letter can be read here: ‘The Supreme Court ruling in the Gerry Adams case walked on graves of judges murdered by IRA,’ May 16 2020).

Since 1985 when my brilliant wife’s career was destroyed I too have been working in my own way for peace and justice.

But we all have to learn lessons, however unpalatable they may be.

Irish rugby is a beacon of light for us all, as is Trevor Ringland.

The Southern Unionists in Trinity College Dublin (471 dead in World War I) were betrayed by the British in December 1920.

Since then the Ulster Unionists have been betrayed by the British in Westminster, most recently the DUP by Boris Johnson (Eton and Balliol College, Oxford) in 2019.

Ulster Unionists are indeed Ulster’s slow learners par excellence (almost as dumb as the English).

Ulster Unionists must abandon their dependence on a treacherous and incompetent Tory Party.

They must find new friends, not least on the island of Ireland for they too are Irish.
