London church faces bankruptcy

St. Michael's Cornhill, 'One of London's oldest and most celebrated churches,' may fall by the wayside, according to the Times of London.

Despite the Great Fire of 1666, in which all but the tower was lost, the church has survived to the present day.

Known for its distinguished choir, St. Michael’s is famous for its magnificent organ and choral music.

Now, nearly 900 years since the church opened its doors in 1133, it may face bankruptcy.

All hope is not lost for St. Michael’s however.

In his autobiography, “Recollections and Reflections,” Henry Martyn Hart, the late Dean of St. John’s Cathedral, Denver, recalls his own misfortunes after sailing from England in 1879.

The first cathedral, built in 1881, perished in a fire in 1903 and it seemed that all was lost.

That was not the case, however, and a new cathedral opened its doors in 1911.

Today it is renown for its resplendent Platt Rogers organ and English choral settings.
