Naomi Long: Latest in a long line of shocking Nama allegations

Only a fully independent cross-border investigation by police will be able to satisfy public concerns regarding allegations of corruption in relation to Nama's Northern Ireland portfolio deal.

BBC Spotlight’s latest investigation into the allegations around the £1 billion deal showed Frank Cushnahan in one case taking £40,000 from property developer John Miskelly during a meeting in a hospital car park in 2012.

Mr Cushnahan has denied any wrongdoing.

Mr Miskelly stated any payments made by him have been “legitimate”.

Tuesday night’s BBC programme was the latest in a long line of shocking allegations.

I would urge the PSNI, National Crime Agency and Gardai to co-operate on fully investigating this issue as a matter of urgency.

Allegations in the Spotlight programme of political interference and corruption cannot be allowed to continue to fester, nor can the border be allowed to inhibit full investigation across both jurisdictions.

As more allegations continue to emerge around the Nama deal and alleged improper political influence, the stench of corruption will continue to pollute the political environment and will further undermine public confidence until it is fully and transparently investigated.
