The Caleb Foundation '“ a lobby group which seeks to represent the views of Evangelical Christians across the province '“ wishes to express concern about the recent Gran Fondo cycling event, run last Sunday.

We take no issue with the race itself, which is a colourful spectacle and of considerable benefit to the Northern Ireland economy.

However, the fact that it took place on a Sunday caused real issues with thousands of Christians, for whom Sunday is a day for honouring God in public worship, and for refraining from activities like sport and other forms of entertainment.

We also regret that some churches were forced to cancel or rearrange services of public worship last Sunday, and had not been consulted in advance.

This was surely to show much less consideration than was called for. We take this opportunity to remind people that God has ordained that one day in seven be set apart in a special way for the worship of God and rest from daily work.

He has done this for our good as individuals and for the wider benefit of society. It is always to our blessing if we honour God and His law.
