A united Ireland is still a pipe dream

Is there anything that the nationalists/republicans will not blame on Brexit?

We had a Republic politician blaming Ireland not winning the rugby world cup bid on Brexit!

We have a republican party that were anti EU, now pro European and trying to stop the will of the people of the UK because it may lead to a hard border.

An article by Breidge Gadd in the News Letter (‘Many nationalists in NI were happy with the status quo until Brexit’, Nov 1) seems to believe that the UK should not exit the EU because it upsets a lot of nationalist/republicans and further separates them from their beloved Republic.

She seems to be implying that if unionists became less unionist and support Remain, nationalists may be happy with the status quo. I believe this to be a myth as many within the nationalist/republican community do not want Northern Ireland to work as a country within the UK.

They have to realise that Northern Ireland is part of the UK by the will of the majority of people in Northern Ireland. This being the case we must abide by the UK majority vote on our membership of the EU. The whole of the UK voted to leave the EU by over 500,000 majority.

With the behaviour of the EU, observers believe those supporting Brexit now to be even higher. Most unionists must now realise that the EU was being used by republicans against them as a Trojan horse to alienate them from the UK.

It would be a mistake to listen to all the nationalist hype that if we alienate ourselves from the UK single market by rejecting the will of the British people, that the majority of nationalists will suddenly become loyal Northern Ireland citizens, happy to be part of the United Kingdom.

The truth is that a lot of nationalists know (like the other 27 countries realise about the EU) that without British money Northern Ireland will struggle to exist. This makes a united Ireland just a pipe dream.
