We wish '˜shalom' to Jewish community

The recent desecration of Jewish graves in Belfast was an awful act of hatred, if not anti-Semtism, completely unprovoked, and abhorred by most decent people of Northern Ireland.

Having lived among the Jewish community in Israel for over e decade until 2002, I realised how much remembrance and memorials mean to the Jewish people and it was a great shame to see these family tombstones broken with the traditional Hebrew writing on them, so cognisant of Jewish graves, the holy language that gave the world the Bible.

My Israeli friends used to ask me, “Why do people hate us so much?” and I am sure the sentiments of the Jewish community of Belfast are equally as non-plussed as my Jewish friend in Tel-Aviv.

I would like to send condolences and support to the Jewish community after this terrible act, and may we wish them ‘shalom’ - peace and wholeness as they try to piece together the memories of their loved ones.
