Parade and service to remember teen soldier

A special remembrance parade and service will take place near Moira next month to mark the 50th anniversary of the death in service of Guardsman Trevor Bell.

He was killed in an ambush on April 20, 1967 during the uprising against British Crown forces in the former colony of Aden (now part of Yemen). He was just 19.

Brought up in the Meadow Road area of Moira, Trevor joined the Irish Guards as a boy soldier and was soon deployed to Aden where during his service he received a mention in despatches for his bravery.

In tribute to their fallen comrade, members of the Ulster Branch of the Irish Guards Association will parade to Trummery Graveyard on Sunday, April 9 at noon.

The parade will form up at the DB Tiles car park and will return following the service.

“The Bell family are well known in Moira and are delighted that we are honouring the memory of Trevor,” a spokesman for the Irish Guards Association Ulster Branch said.
