Saoirse-Monica Jackson, who plays Erin Quinn in the hit show, which follows a group of teenagers in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, revealed in a YouTube video that the book is called Erin’s Diary and charts the inner monologue of the hilarious show lead.

Erin’s Diary will be an ‘in world’ publication that dives deeper into what viewers have already seen in the first and second series but will also include several new stories and reveal previously unknown details about the characters.

The ‘diary’ will include doodles, poetry, newspaper clippings, school reports and notes from Erin’s friends on the show and is described as being as “warm, funny and brilliantly observed” as the TV show.”

A synopsis for the book reads: “Erin has troubles of her own, like the fact that the boy she’s in love with (actually in LOVE with) doesn’t know she exists. Or that her Ma and Aunt Sarah make her include her weirdo cousin Orla in everything she does.

“Or that head teacher Sister Michael refuses to acknowledge Erin as a literary genius. Not to mention the fact that her second best friend has ALMOST had sex, whereas Erin’s never even kissed anyone yet. These are Erin’s Troubles.”

Ms McGee added in a statement: “I’m thrilled to be able to share our first ever official Derry Girls Book with the world. Erin’s Diary was such a joy to write. I loved spending time with these characters again. The book will reveal some new information about old events as well as some brand new antics from Erin and the gang – hopefully it will keep fans laughing until series three hits the screen.”

Saoirse-Monica Jackson shared the news on Instagram, with two pictures of herself posing with the book.

She captioned the post: ‘Is that my Diary???’... Erin’s Diary is out in November & you should really read it our she’ll be absolutely raging at you.’

The actress got into character for a video promoting the book’s release on YouTube, as Erin reads an excerpt, pretending she’s giving a speech after winning the Nobel Prize for Literature.

• Erin’s Diary is published in hardback by Trapeze on November 12, priced £16.99.
