Carl Frampton’s heartfelt tribute following death of mentor Billy McKee

Former world champion Carl Frampton has praised Billy McKee as a “legend of a man” he respects above all others following the passing of the former Midland ABC boxing coach.

Announcing the news on the club’s Facebook page on Monday, Midland ABC: “It’s with heavy hearts, Midland Boxing Club and our committee members can confirm the passing of our founder and past president Billy McKee.

“Our hearts are completely broken. We send our sincerest condolences and deepest sympathies to his family.”

Frampton later tweeted: “I owe so much to this man. He taught me how to box but he taught me so much more. Dedicated his life to helping me & others. Straight talking, hard wee man who I respect more than anyone else. Legend of man.

“Sympathies to Eileen and the rest of his family. RIP Billy, love ya.”

Professional fighter Steven Ward later tweeted: “Sad day to find out that Billy McKee has passed away. Billy was a great man, called a spade a spade even if it wasn’t what you wanted to hear, you have to admire a man like that.

“You’ll be missed Billy, thoughts with the whole family, friends and boxers.”

A message on the Boxing Tickets NI social media said: “We would like to pass on our heartfelt condolences to the family of Billy McKee and to all those in Midlands ABC.

“The man responsible for the rise of Carl Frampton, a legend on the Shore road who will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Rest in Peace Bill.”
