Carrick Rangers FC’s chief steward Jackie Glover was ‘a friend to all’

Carrick Rangers Football Club’s chief steward and community stalwart Jackie Glover has been described as “a friend to all”.

Mr Glover, who died on Sunday after a brave battle with illness, had a long association with Carrick Rangers.

Paying tribute on social media, a spokesperson for the Taylors Avenue club said: “Jackie was an important member of a dedicated match day team who provided support to the club at fixtures both home and away.

“His role as chief steward played a pivotal role in making sure things went smoothly on match days and provided assistance to visiting fans.

“Jackie will be sorely missed and our thoughts and condolences go to Janet and the entire family circle at this sad time.”

East Antrim DUP MLA David Hilditch had known Mr Glover for many years.

Mr Hilditch said: “I am saddened to hear Jackie has passed away. He was a dedicated steward at Carrick Rangers and made supporters feel comfortable and welcome.

“He was very active in the community whether that be at the football club, as a special educational needs bus driver or working at Uel Irvine’s funeral directors. Jackie never stopped.

“He battled bravely with his illness. My thoughts are with his family circle at this sad time.”

Mr Glover stood for the Ulster Unionist Party in the 2005 election to the legacy Carrickfergus Borough Council for the Knockagh Monument DEA.

East Antrim UUP MLA Roy Beggs said: “Jackie was well known and a friend to all. He was often involved in assisting charity events and showing compassion for those in need.

“My thoughts and prayers go to his wife Janet, sons Neil, Philip, Graham and to the wider family circle at this sad time.”

Mr Glover also had a passion for classic cars.

Jimmy Blair, chairman of the Newtownabbey and District Old Vehicle Club, said the club’s members “deeply regret the death of Jackie and and tender their deepest sympathy to his wife Janet and family.”

Mr Glover served as chairman of the East Antrim Old Vehicle Club. He was involved in the club’s charity run to Portrush in 2014. For more on this, read here
