Men in Carrickfergus have been developing their culinary expertise via a timely new health initiative.

Carrickfergus Community Forum (CCF) is engaging with a number of males from the Co Antrim town to promote a positive mental attitude, build confidence and maintain positive healthy relationships.

A spokesperson for the forum said: “We have supported the individuals to take part in a variety of men’s health sessions and also offered support and encouragement for employment opportunities and mentoring for all.

“They have really bonded over the sessions but the current situation has meant they were unable to undertake a series of planned activities. Not to be disheartened, they have started a weekly online cookery session where they are able to have a virtual meeting and learn some new skills while maintaining their contact to support each other through a difficult period of isolation.

“They had their first cookery session on Wednesday night and all logged in to a FaceTime app to make fresh burgers together. They had a brilliant laugh, made some delicious food and stayed connected. Have to say, we are very impressed with the quality so far.”

The ongoing emergency around coronavirus has not deterred the participants’ enthusiasm for the project.

“Although many people are finding it difficult at this time, these men have adapted to this new way of staying in touch really well and have a series of weekly sessions planned where they can still enjoy each others company and learn some skills at the same time.

“They hope to make a variety of recipes over the next few weeks and this will build their capacity as individuals with the added benefit of learning to cook for the family.

“We at CCF are really proud of the guys for sticking at this and making sure they continue to stay in touch during what is a challenging and unfamiliar time for everyone. Well done everyone.”
