Children will be able to use swings again at council owned play parks across Belfast – nine months after the first lockdown.

Playgrounds owned by the council in public spaces such as Ormeau Park, Cherryvale, Botanic Gardens, Lady Dixon had many swings taken from their frames after the first lockdown, when parks were completely closed, encouraging people to socially distance.

Councillor Gary McKeown said: “That was perfectly legitimate, and a worthy thing to do. But people were starting to come to me, telling me children are on top of one another elsewhere in the park. It is a good idea but almost has no practical purpose.”

Councillor McKeown asked for a review of the swings, which was conducted in June, and the decision was made to replace the swings this month, with all playgrounds due to be back to their former glory this week.

He said: “Play parks are a fantastic resource in our city and provide welcome respite for families with young children in the current circumstances, allowing them to keep active and have fun in a safe open-air environment.

“There’s also the fact that fixed play equipment couldn’t be removed, so the missing swings may have actually resulted in more children congregating on climbing frames and similar facilities.

“I’m pleased that council officers agreed to my request to carry out a review, and as a result the missing swings will now be reinstalled.

“However, it’s still essential for all park users to continue to maintain social distancing, keep their hands clean and respect other people using the facilities.”

A Belfast City Council spokesperson said: “Swing seats have been reinstalled back into our playgrounds following a period of temporary removal.

“We continue to encourage members of the public to take personal responsibility for their own hygiene care and to adhere to signage advising on best practice for using the facilities at each location. Staff continue to carry out daily deep cleans at each site as part of their daily tasks.”
