Coleraine's Lyla takes 'Star Baker' title in the Junior Bake Off tent

Oh crumbs! A talented young Coleraine baker has picked up the Star Baker title in the latest episode of Ch4’s Junior Bake Off.

12-year-old Lyla impressed the judges on biscuit day with her version of the ‘biscuit world record she would like to break’.

Her Viennese whirl and gingerbread knitted creatures were described by the judges as “sensational” and “perfect”.

Lyla also impressed in the technical challenge in the episode shown on Tuesday, January 13.

The contestants were challenged to make a giant cookie with banana ice cream and macadamia nut brittle. Lyla’s technical challenge was described as “really well baked” and her ice cream “excellent” – and she took second place!

Lyla’s sense of humour has endeared her to the viewers. When asked what biscuit she would like to be, Lyla said: “If I could be any biscuit, I’d be a party ring. I just love partying at any chance.”

Lyla’s kindness has also impressed viewers as they have seen her leave her own baking challenge to help fellow contestants or regularly ask ‘does anyone need any help?’.

When asked what she learned most from appearing on Junior Bake Off, Lyla said: “I have learnt that I can give anything a go! JBO has helped me to believe in myself.

"I am so proud to have been the only child picked from Northern Ireland and am delighted to have represented our little country. It has been a wonderful baking journey that I will never forget.”

Lyla now takes on Bread Day in the next episode which will screen on Wednesday, January 14 at 5pm on Ch4.
