The shocked Cookstown community is still talking about the tragic loss of a young member in the wake of his funeral – with two of his former schools paying him glowing tributes.

The funeral of 21-year-old Taylor Stewart took place on Saturday in the Cookstown family home at 1pm, followed by interment in Sandholes Presbyterian Churchyard.

A family notice described Mr Stewart as the "adored dad of Tommy, much loved son of Chanelle, cherished brother of Paige, much loved grandson of Mitchell and Minnie, Robert and Hetty".

The notice also described the Tullyard Road man as "a treasured nephew and cousin".

A multi-agency search took place for Mr Stewart after he went missing at around 5.30am on New Year's Day.

On Wednesday last week police reported that officers looking for him discovered a body in Cookstown.

Speaking today – the day after his funeral – local UUP councillor Trevor Wilson told the News Letter that the community is still very shocked by the tragic death.

"What the family had to go through, nobody would want to go through," he said.

"It is a terrible tragedy - it is still being talked about."

He added: "I would just like to pay tribute to all the public services, police and rescue volunteers who helped in the search as well."

Mr Wilson also paid tribute to Mr Taylor's grandfather, Mitchell Crooks, who made a public appeal for the safe return of his grandson.

"He is a really nice fella - and also a great darts player,” the councillor added.

Two of Mr Taylor's schools have now also paid tribute to their former pupil.

In a statement on social media, Cookstown High School said he is "fondly remembered by staff as a vibrant young person with a warm sense of humour and a genuine passion for cars".

The school said he "often spoke enthusiastically about his ambition to become a mechanic" and also that "his personality and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on all who knew him".

The school added: "We were deeply saddened to learn of Taylor’s untimely passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this very difficult time, particularly those family members who are currently pupils at the school."

Donaghey Primary School also sent sincere condolences to his family and friends.

"We are devastated for Taylor's family circle including those family members who attended Donaghey Primary School as pupils," the school said.

"Taylor left Donaghey Primary School as a P7 Leaver in June 2016.

"During his time at the school, Taylor shone in all practical activities. In addition Taylor’s technological and ICT knowledge was fantastic. This is where he excelled!

"We commend Taylor's family, the emergency services and volunteer groups who have tirelessly searched for Taylor over the last week. Rest in Peace Taylor."

Many people continued to pour out their sympathy and condolences on social media.

Roberta Simpson said: "This is just so sad… we pass on our love and deepest sympathy to Taylor’s family and in particular his devoted grandparents, his sister and of course his wee son."

Another said: "A very sad time for Cookstown and Sandholes, God bless all his family, friends, wee Tommy and everyone who knew him. RIP Taylor, put out loads of black smoke in heaven sweetheart."
