Flute bands to stage ‘stay at home’ Twelfth parade in Newtownabbey

Two Newtownabbey flute bands are to parade through Rathcoole and Rathfern to mark the 330th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne.

Annual Twelfth demonstrations were cancelled by the loyal orders at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

Members of Rathcoole Protestant Boys’ Flute Band and the Cloughfern Young Conquerors are to team up on Monday, July 13, for a ‘stay at home’ parade in the Macedon area.

A flyer advertising the event has been shared widely on social media.

The organisers have called on residents to “decorate the streets and your homes” as “the bands are coming to you”.

Organisers added: “We will be operating strict social distancing measures. Your safety is our priority. Do not follow the bands.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Parades Commission said they have not received a notification on this event yet.

The spokesperson added: “The guidance is to notify 28 days in advance, so there’s still time.”
