Lights fantastic and it’s all for a good cause

It might only be October, but Christmas has certainly come early for a Londonderry couple who have got into the Christmas spirit with decorations, all in aid of a good cause.

Every year on November 1, Dermot Bradley and Gary Bailie decorate inside and outside of their home for charity, but due to the new restrictions imposed with the ongoing pandemic, the couple decided to brighten up the lives of the people of Londonderry a little early, all while raising vital funds for Foyle Search and Rescue.

Dermot said: “It’s been crazy. We were on holiday in Turkey and we were in quarantine for two weeks when we got back.

“We’ve always put our decorations up on November 1, so to lift our spirits and everyone else’s around us, we thought, why not? We were stuck inside for two weeks so we just went ahead and did it. Everyone loves it.”

Although the display has only been up and running since last weekend, Dermot said they are overwhelmed by the response.

“It’s been a massive hit, and for Foyle Search and Rescue as well, they do such amazing work.

“We have to stress that everyone has to wear a face mask, keep their distance and follow the guidelines.

“We’re actually not finished decorating yet, we haven’t had a chance to put it all out! Every evening there’s cars coming in, turning and making their donations and going again.

“The donation bucket was full by the second day, it’s a bit overwhelming but it’s amazing for Foyle Search and Rescue,” he added.

The fantastic Christmas display can be viewed from a safe distance right up until Chirstmas. Donations can also be made online via https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DermotNoel

Meanwhile, another bright spark, Tim Hancock, is dusting down his festive decorations in prepartion for the big switch on on November 21.

Tim said: “This year has been an exceptionally difficult year for everyone in our community. Everyone is understandably exhausted and worried. For this reason we have decided it’s more important than ever that we have a display...to give some hope to our community.”

Visitors to Tim’s Lights are asked to follow the latest COVID-19 guidance and abide by social distancing rules.
