Linfield fan wears full Glentoran kit to help supporters’ club raise £21K for NHS

A Linfield supporters’ club has raised more than £20,000 for the NHS, thanks in part to a Blues fan wearing the kit of their Belfast rivals.

Linfield fan Stephen McMillen (pictured) wore the Glentoran kit borrowed from one of his friends in the Raven Social Club in east Belfast when completing a 5k charity walk.

George McCutcheon, chairman of Raven Linfield Supporters’ Club, said: “Being based in east Belfast, although we’re Bluemen we’ve still got an awful lot of Glentoran friends.

“In the Raven Social Club on Castlereagh Street there’s a Glentoran supporters’ club along with our Linfield supporters’ club.

“Stephen has some good friends in there who jestingly said they’d pay him to do 5k wearing a Glentoran kit. He said, ‘tell you what, raise £500 and I’ll do it’. In the end they raised over £800, so fair play to them.”

Of the money that the club, which has 40 members including three NHS workers, has raised, George said: “It was very surprising. We’re very proud to have been able to raise so much.

“We started off and it was just to get members doing 5k, just to have something to do and raise a bit of money. We set a target of £1,000.

“It’s now past £21,000. Some members have walked 5k, others have run 5k, we’ve three members who have cycled 50k. Those who haven’t been able to do any of it have just made donations.”

Anyone wishing to donate to the club’s NHS appeal can do so by searching for Raven LSC on JustGiving.
