An Armagh man is planning to drive a ‘banger’ across Europe in aid of the charity that rescued him when his lorry was involved in a serious accident last year.

In April 2019, Robert Phoenix was transporting part of a concrete bridge by lorry outside Coagh in Co Tyrone, when his vehicle overturned on the Ballynargan Road.

He suffered broken ribs and a broken collar bone and due to the severity of the accident, the charity Air Ambulance NI was tasked to the scene.

The air ambulance doctor and paramedic treated Robert before he was brought to Craigavon Area Hospital. He spent 10 days in hospital before undergoing surgery for his injuries.

In May Robert will take part in the British Bangers Road Trip through Europe in aid of the charity.

The driving convoy will travel throughout Europe over seven days from May 10 to 16, starting in Birmingham, passing through Germany, Switzerland, France, Andorra and finishing in Spain.

Now well on the road to a full recovery, Robert wants to say thank you: “I’m so grateful to Air Ambulance NI and what they did for me following my accident.

“An event like that is truly horrific and their presence really helped me to stay calm as I knew I was getting the best possible care.

“I’m looking forward to getting on the road this year to hopefully raise some money for this very worthwhile cause.”

Up to 50 cars will be involved, and drivers will be on the road for each full day, stopping only at night, to ensure they reach Spain by the end date. This will be the event’s fifth year and it has raised almost £1m for various charities since it began.

Kerry Anderson, Air Ambulance NI, said: “What Robert is planning to do is fantastic and we really look forward to following his journey.”
