NI bar scene 'legend' dies suddenly - people post tributes and share stories on social media

Tributes are pouring in for well known Northern Ireland publican, Charles Lavery, who died suddenly on Monday.

Lavery's Bar in Belfast confirmed Mr. Lavery's sad passing via a post on its Facebook page on Thursday afternoon.

"It is with deep regret and profound sadness that we inform you that Charlie Lavery passed away suddenly on Monday 30th March.

"We hope that everyone who knew him has at least one happy memory because we have many.

"He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered."

Patrons, past and present, paid tribute to Mr. Lavery on social media.

"Deepest sympathies to the extended Lavery family - Charlie was a lovely man ," commented one woman.

"Very sad to hear this. I’ve very fond memories of Charlie manning the front door in the mid-80s. A gentleman," said a man.

Kim Mawhinney interviewed Mr. Lavery for the Ulster Museum in 2012.

"RIP Charlie Lavery you complete Belfast Legend," Tweeted Kim.

"I was lucky to interview him a few years ago for the @UlsterMuseum about what it was like during the Troubles."

Mr. Lavery's funeral will be private and his family have asked for privacy at this difficult time.
