NI flautist Martha Guiney to perform at Washington St Patrick’s Day events

A young flautist from Newry is set to perform at two prestigious events in Washington to mark St Patrick’s Day.

Martha Guiney, who is a current recipient of the Arts Council and BBC NI’s Young Musician’s Platform Award, will showcase her musical talent at two Northern Ireland Bureau breakfast events on Thursday and Friday.

Andrew Elliott, director of the NI Bureau in North America, said: “There has been a huge explosion of musical talent in Northern Ireland in recent years and it’s a delight for me to have the opportunity to showcase an award-winning young flautist, who will be performing to a huge audience in the capital of the United States to mark St Patrick’s Day.

“The Northern Ireland Bureau breakfast is an institution here in Washington DC and I know that the sound of Martha Guiney’s flute will add enormously to the success of the event.”

Sonya Whitefield, arts development o fficer with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, added: “The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is committed to providing meaningful opportunities for our artists to develop their professional, artistic careers and also to showcase NI talent internationally.

“We are proud to partner with our colleagues at the Northern Ireland Bureau in Washington to showcase the immense talents of Martha Guiney, a special experience that will stay with the young musician for a long time to come.”

Martha releases her debut album this summer.
