NI Trust in tribute to mother-of-two social worker who died due to coronavirus

Tributes have poured in for a Northern Ireland social worker and mother-of-two who sadly lost her life to coronavirus.

Her funeral will take place today in Co Tyrone.

The Western Health and Social Care Trust said she is the first member of staff to have died due to the virus.

In a statement posted online, a spokesperson for the Trust said: “Everyone within the Western Trust are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of our dear friend and colleague, Nuala McLaughlin.

“The challenges faced by the Covid-19 pandemic have been very tough on all Health and Social Care staff and it is most difficult when we lose on of our own directly for the first time to this disease.”

The spokesperson continued: “Nuala was a highly valued member of our team and, more importantly, our friend.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with Nuala’s daughter Orla, son Eoin, family and extended family circle and friends at this very sad time.

“We also keep in our thoughts our colleagues who treated and cared for Nuala in South West Acute Hospital.”

The Trust added: “We also offer our sympathies as we come to the end of 2020 to all those families who have lost loved ones to Covid-19 and other illnesses this year.”

She is described in a family notice as “loving mother of Orla and Eoin and dear daughter of Claire and the late Frank, much loved sister of Cathal, Colette (Sludden), Paul, Eamonn, Fr Peter (Armagh), Catherine (McKenna) and Brian.”

Her funeral, which is strictly private due to coronavirus rules, will leave her family home in Ballygawley at 11am today for for interment in St Malachys Cemetery, with Requiem Mass to follow in St Malachys Church, Ballymacilroy this afternoon.
